About the role
Enjoying Manchester at night is a big part of the university experience for many of our students. It’s a fact we embrace here at the Students’ Union, not least because it’s how so many friendships are formed, how community is built, and how many of us come to engage with Manchester’s world-renowned cultural scene. And yet, we also know that more is needed to ensure that everyone can feel safe and well when out and about at night.
Student Angels is a night-time safety volunteering programme run by the Students’ Union, a charity that exists to make sure all students can thrive, develop, and make change while at Manchester. The Student Angels Assistant is a key contributor to this work, focusing on the day-to-day running of a programme which sees teams of student volunteers provide well-being support to fellow students and the public while they’re out making the most of Manchester’s night-time offering.
The focus of the Student Angels Assistant role will vary across the year. At some points, you’ll focus on recruiting volunteers and getting them confident for their very first shift. At others, you’ll be busy analysing impact data and telling the story of your successes to programme partners such as Manchester City Council. You’ll also have the opportunity to contribute to wider Union work, such as our annual Reclaim the Night campaign.
The Student Angels Assistant is an entry-level volunteer management role. The postholder is responsible for recruiting and onboarding volunteers, scheduling and preparing for shifts, managing volunteer data, and giving our volunteers the encouragement, support, and recognition they need to succeed in their roles. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop important programme management skills, such as building relationships with partners, evaluating the impact of our work, and spending against a budget. This is a fantastic role for students interested in careers in the charity or public sector, though many of the skills you’ll develop will be transferrable to a wide range of jobs.
We’re looking for a Student Angels Assistant who can work independently, adapt to change, communicate with confidence, and proactively address barriers to involvement in Student Angels. The ideal candidate will also have great administration skills, love working with people, and be keen to learn and challenge themself. You’ll receive lots of support from your line manager and other colleagues, who’ll work with you to hone your skills and identify and pursue new areas of professional development.
This is a part-time, zero-hours role that is designed to fit flexibly around your study commitments. You’ll work from the office around two thirds of the time and be able to work the rest remotely.
