Student Inclusion Partner

Who are we?

We are Manchester Students’ Union, the biggest SU in the country, supporting over 40,000 students throughout their time at university. We help to make student life the best it can be by supporting students to campaign for change, creating opportunities to meet new people, providing employment opportunities, providing advice and support and being a safe place on campus.

We are a values-centred organisation that employs around 90 permanent, full-time members of staff. We recruit a wide range of roles throughout the year within all our departments from our Commercial team operating Manchester Academy Venues, 13 Media, Bar 532 & Kitchen and Corridor Coffee to our Student Activities, Student Engagement, Marketing and Communications, Finance, HR and Facilities teams. Our team of around 400 part-time, studying staff are instrumental in providing to support to all departments as well as leading major projects like Student Angels. When you join UMSU, you’ll be immersed in an environment that empowers staff to make great things happen and we're always on the lookout for innovative, passionate, and proactive people to join us.

Our values are really important to us and shape the work that we do every day. As part of our recruitment process, we want you to demonstrate how your experiences, behaviours and skills align with our values. You can find more detailed explanations of our values on our website.

About the role

At the Students’ Union, we believe that all students deserve to feel a strong sense of community and belonging at university, that no student should be denied the opportunity to feel connected, supported, and at home. We know that deep belonging contributes to good academic performance and wellbeing, and that community is where our students build skills and traits for thriving both during and beyond their studies. As a Student Inclusion Partner, you’ll be at the heart of the Union and the University’s joint effort to dismantle barriers to inclusion and belonging faced by our Black-heritage students.

Working within both the Union’s Inclusion team and the University Manchester 10/10 team, the Student Inclusion Partner will use their expertise on the needs and challenges of Black-heritage students at the University of Manchester to lead projects focused on reducing the degree awarding gap between Black and White students. As a champion of anti-racism in higher education, you’ll contribute to the development and delivery of Manchester 10/10 programmes, which support Black-heritage students to build their peer, professional, and academic networks and develop the confidence to engage with all that the Manchester student experience has to offer.

The Student Inclusion Partner is an events management specialist who will work collaboratively with staff and students to plan, run, and evaluate events, including those belonging to the Black Leadership Programme. You’ll be a confident presenter who enjoys speaking in front of an audience and is capable of facilitating activities and discussions in inclusive and empowering ways. As a student partner, you’ll also be pivotal in creating opportunities for Black-heritage students to give their input and working with your team to make sure that diverse student perspectives are recognised, listened to, and acted upon whenever decisions affecting them are made.

While in role, the Student Inclusion Partner will receive plenty of support from their Union line manager, as well as University colleagues, to develop their skills and confidence in listening to Black-heritage students and constructively challenging the ideas and approaches of others. You’ll work with your line manager to assess your learning needs and pursue opportunities to develop as an inclusion specialist and an expert in the experiences of Black-heritage students at Manchester and in the UK.
